.DISCUSSION... Issued at 254 PM CDT Sat Sep 27 2025
Currently a slight ridging pattern is present over the Pacific Northwest and Northern Plains. An upper level high is sitting over the Southern Plains. A cutoff low is moving through the SOCAL region as well. At the surface a high pressure is located in northern South Dakota. This high pressure is slowly moving east today and will/is creating breezy south winds on the backside. With the ridging pattern over the Northern Plains, today and Sunday will be sunny with above average highs in the 70s and lower 80s. Sunday the thermal ridge will be the strongest in the west, where temperatures will be in the upper 80s! Elsewhere will see the lower 80s. Some breezy winds may be found across south central and eastern portions of the state. Afternoon RH values may lower into the 20s across the west Sunday afternoon, although the breezier winds should remain east of these lower RH values.
Sunday the cutoff low will diminish, but create the flow aloft to change in the Northern Plains to southwest flow. The flow will be very weak with little forcing, so no thunderstorms are forecasted through Monday. The rest of next week will see this southwest flow slowly increase in strength and diffluence, along with some weak low pressures moving through. With this the chance of showers and thunderstorms return. The chances per the NBM are less than 20 percent, but with dew points in the 50s and high temperatures in the 70s the likelihood of storms are probably higher than the NBM has. Late next week a low and trough digs in from Canada leading to cooler air next weekend. The NBM has highs in the 70s, but the range of possible temperatures is very large due to the uncertainty of the strength of that trough. Regardless, temperatures will stay above average through the forecast period. Breezy winds may be found at times through at least mid week, possibly peaking Tuesday and Wednesday.
