.DISCUSSION...

Today through Thursday...

Conditions will be breezy and slightly cooler today, although still above normal, behind a dry cold front moving through early this morning. Highs will be in the 70s. Gusts of 20 to 35 mph will be common through the afternoon, before decreasing in the evening. With the continued dry conditions, highs above normal, and breezy conditions, fire weather concerns are elevated today. Take care not to cause a spark!

For the weekend, highs will increase under weak ridging, with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s Saturday and mid 80s by Sunday. Conditions will also remain mostly dry. By late Sunday, upper level flow is expected to become more southwesterly and energy from a disturbance over the four corners will allow isolated (10-20%) showers and thunderstorms over the Absaroka/Beartooth mountains.

By Monday, the disturbance moves northeast while a Pacific trough begins to move in over the west coast. Energy from this trough will allow scattered (30-60%) showers and isolated (10-20%) thunderstorms through midweek. Any precipitation during this time, outside of the mountains, is expected to be light, with generally only a 10-40% chance of at least 0.1" Monday through Wednesday. Over the western mountains, better precip is expected, with a 60% chance of more than 0.25" during the same time frame.

Temperatures will gradually cool through the end of the week under the more unsettled pattern. Monday will see highs in the upper 70s over the west to mid 80s over the east, falling to mostly 70s by Wednesday. By Thursday, highs will be in the mid 60s to low 70s. With these cooling temperatures, very light snow is possible over the highest mountain peaks at times, although there is currently a less than 20% chance of more than 2 inches of snow through Thursday. .AVIATION...

06z Discussion... VFR conditions will prevail for the entire forecast period. KLVM is experiencing gusty drainage/gap winds which are allowing gusts push 40kts out of the SW. These conditions are forecast to continue until a cold front pushes through around 10z.

Breezy winds out of the south will transition to gusty winds out of the NW with a dry cold front passage that moves through between 10z (central MT) and 16z (southeast MT). Winds could gust up to 30kts across the region. Some mountaintop high clouds (FL250) could push across the region with this front. Widely isolated mountain obscuration is possible after 10z. Around 00z all sites should see a rapid decrease in winds back below 10kts. WMR &&
