.DISCUSSION...

The rest of today through next Saturday...

Warm and dry conditions will continue into the first half of Sunday under weak ridging. Then, a weather system and associated cold front will bring a chance of precipitation and breezy conditions (20-30 mph) late Sunday into Monday.

Ahead of the front, the chance of showers and thunderstorms will be 20-40% over the Absaroka/Beartooth mountains and foothills Sunday afternoon. Then, Sunday evening into Monday, the chance of precip increases as the front moves through, with a 40-60% chance of at least 0.25" over the plains for locations west of Rosebud county and a 60-80% chance of the same over the mountains and foothills. The chance quickly drops below 20% east of Rosebud county. The system then exits the region late Monday.

Over the mountains, snow levels are expected to fall to around 9000 ft by Monday morning, allowing a few inches of wet snow over the highest peaks. Currently, there is only a 20% chance of more than 4 inches of snow over the highest peaks of the Absaroka/Beartooth mountains. Only light snow is expected at this time over the Beartooth pass, with a 15% chance of up to 2 inches of snow over the Wyoming side of the pass. Those with recreation or travel plans in the mountains should prepare for wintry impacts during this time.

After the system exits, warm and dry conditions look to return for Tuesday into the weekend as upper level ridging builds in again.

High temperatures Sunday will be generally in the 80s, decreasing Monday behind the front to 60s to low 70s. As ridging builds in, highs return to generally 80s by the middle of the week into the weekend. Archer

.AVIATION...

In general, VFR will prevail into Sunday with high pressure overhead. There is moderate confidence (>50% chance) for an area of fog/stratus to impact far southeast MT Sunday morning (09-15z). IFR or lower is possible, and fog may spread far enough north to include K97M & KBHK. Showers and thunderstorms begin spreading into the southwest mountains Sunday afternoon as the next disturbance approaches from the west. STP
