Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Birmingham AL 1255 PM CDT Sat Sep 6 2025

...New SHORT TERM, LONG TERM, AVIATION...

.SHORT TERM... (This evening through Sunday) Issued at 1255 PM CDT SAT SEP 6 2025

A shortwave impulse along with a surface front is producing scattered showers and thunderstorms across central Alabama as of midday. This activity will continue to move eastward through the afternoon. Weak to moderate instability alongside bulk shear upwards of 25 knots may support a couple strong, but short-lived, storms. Activity should decrease in coverage toward early evening due to the progression of the system and waning diurnal enhancements.

.LONG TERM... (Sunday night through next Friday) Issued at 1255 PM CDT SAT SEP 6 2025

As the parent trough over the Great Lakes pulls away, the front is forecast to become slow-moving or stall to our south and southeast, generally in the vicinity of the immediate Gulf and Atlantic coast. Post-frontal flow will provide us with a bit less-humid air and seasonable temperatures through the week. Rain-free weather also looks to prevail for central Alabama, with showers and thunderstorms favoring an axis from the Gulf to western Atlantic near the front.

.FIRE WEATHER...

After a round of scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon, rain-free weather is forecast to prevail across central Alabama through next week. While drier, post-frontal air will overspread the region, afternoon minimum RHs are currently forecast to average above critical thresholds; however, if dew points trend slightly lower mid to late week, RHs could bottom out just below currently forecast minimums in the lower 30s. 20-foot winds will be northerly around 10 mph on Sunday and then northeast to east between 5-10 mph Monday and Tuesday.
